How to Find Your Type (Without Forcing It)

This isn’t a quiz. It’s a conversation with your soul.

So you’re curious about the Enneagram- maybe even excited to find your type.

You’ve read some descriptions, maybe taken an online test (or three), and you’re still wondering: Which number am I really?

First, let’s take the pressure off.

Finding your type is not a race. It’s a process of remembering. It’s not about choosing the number that sounds “good.” It’s about noticing the patterns that have quietly been running the show- often since childhood.

Here’s the thing: the Enneagram doesn’t type you based on behavior. It types you based on motivation, the internal “why” behind what you do. That’s what makes it powerful… and also why it can take a little while to land on your true type.

A Few Gentle Reminders As You Explore:

1. Start with Curiosity, Not Judgment

You’re not trying to box yourself in- you’re learning your shape. Soften your inner critic. This isn’t about fixing who you are. It’s about understanding how you’ve been protecting the most tender parts of yourself.

2. Notice What Makes You Cringe a Little

Often, your real type won’t just feel familiar- it might feel uncomfortably accurate. The type that stings just a little? That’s usually the one touching a truth you’ve learned to manage or avoid. And that’s okay. You’re safe here.

3. Look for the Pattern, Not the Moment

You may act like every type at different times. That’s normal. The question is: What’s the consistent inner driver? What fear are you often trying to avoid? What longing keeps showing up beneath your choices?

4. Let Your Body Be Part of the Process

Sometimes you’ll feel your type before you fully understand it. A lump in your throat. A drop in your stomach. A quiet “oh…” when you read something that names your inner world. Trust that.

Still Not Sure? That’s Okay.

You don’t need to rush toward certainty. The most important thing is to keep noticing, keep asking, and keep showing up with honesty. The Enneagram works best as a companion — not a label.

It’s not about saying “I’m a 2” or “I’m a 7.” It’s about learning to say: “These have been my coping strategies in life… and now I want to grow beyond that.”

Let it take time. Let it surprise you. Let it become a daily conversation.

Because when you land on your type- really land- something will exhale inside you. And that’s when the journey truly begins.

Until then… breathe, notice, and keep listening.

You’re not behind. You’re right on time.

If you’d like a in-depth and thorough typing interview to help you discover your Enneagram type, I’d be honored to walk that path with you.
